International Relations and Area Studies

A unique, interdisciplinary BA programme


overview:

New (established in 2013) undergraduate, interdisciplinary programme taught entirely in English. The programme focuses on providing broad knowledge and understanding of international political processes, institutions, ideas and cultures. It has been designed for those who work or wish to work within the fields of strategy, security, culture, and political analysis in either governmental or non-governmental organizations, international institutions, development agencies, the media or private industry.

BA students in the second year of their studies choose specialization from among three options:
•    International Security – this specialization module views security from a broad theoretical and historical perspective. It aims to provide a sound knowledge of contemporary international relations with a special focus on security issues, politics, the causes of war and the use and control of force.
•    Politics and Culture – this specialization focuses on the nature of the political world as seen from the perspective of culture. It explores topics like: global migrations and their consequences, human rights and democracy, cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue.
•    Area Studies – this specialization provides knowledge on history, civilization, social and political issues of various regions of the world. In the second year students select two regions out from five available units: Europe, Russia and other Countries of The Commonwealth of Independent States, the Middle East and North Africa, East Asia and the United States, Canada and Latin America.

The program is designed for Polish and international students who work or wish to work within the fields of strategy, security, culture, and political analysis in either governmental or non-governmental organizations, international institutions, development agencies, the media and private industry, or those wishing to acquire further qualifications and/or pursue post-graduate university education in related academic areas. The degree will also meet students' needs if they have a more general interest in foreign policy and international relations, and would like to demonstrate to future employers a sound grasp of international affairs.

The programme is also suitable for students wishing to pursue a ‘Study Abroad' option, in which case the duration of courses is one year or one semester.

entry requirements:

  • Polish Certificate of Matriculation or recognised equivalent of a High School/Secondary School Graduation Certificate from another country
  • Minimum English Language Proficiency at the level of at least B2 (CEFR), or 5.5 to 6.0-6.5 (IELTS), or equivalent. Prospective students must provide the Jagiellonian University with evidence of English Language proficiency in the form of either original documents (i.e. original transcript or test scores) or a certified copy. This requirement does not concern those applicants for whom English is either the native language or was the language of instruction at school.
